Michigan Sports and Spine

Jeff S. Pierce, D.O.

Dr. Jeff S. Pierce is the Medical Director of the Michigan Sports & Spine Centers, PC. He specializes in a comprehensive treatment program for spine, musculoskeletal and joint injuries including sports and occupational problems. His focus for each patient is on comprehensive evaluation, proper diagnosis and individualized treatment regimens.  Dr. Pierce provides an educational approach to injuries and conditions to encourage the patient to share responsibility in his or her situation. Dr. Pierce also teaches prevention techniques to prohibit further injury, empowering patients to control their recovery.

Through research and clinical experience, he has created an aggressive, non-surgical, comprehensive spine care program which has over an 80% success rate for return to work and normal function compared to the national average of approximately 50%.  The program includes various treatment options, such as manipulation techniques, nerve testing, physical therapy, spinal injections under fluoroscopy and most recently, musculoskeletal ultrasound. The goal of the program is for patients to return to their optimal lifestyle.

Dr. Pierce has served three terms on the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports.  He has been an active member on the task force designated to create the Prescription for Fitness for the State of Michigan.  Dr. Pierce has been the Team Physician for the University of Michigan-Dearborn Athletics, Belle Tire Hockey Teams, Little Caesar's AAA Travel Hockey, the Detroit Fury and Detroit Dogs.  He authors an “Ask the Doctor” column in Hockey Weekly, which has educated and advised the hockey community for nearly 3 years.   He is known throughout the entertainment community as “Doc Rock,” treating entertainers who perform at Palace Sports and Entertainment and Olympia Entertainment venues.

Dr. Pierce feels it is very important to continue to educate medical students, interns, and residents.  He is very proud of the fellowship/preceptorship that he has directed for 6 years.  His students are working in very successful practices around the country.  Under Dr. Pierce’s leadership, Michigan Sports and Spine has been the medical sponsor for the Breast Cancer 3 day (now known as the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure) since 2005.  In addition, Dr. Pierce is the founder of Athletes Unlimited, a non-profit organization for the support and development of athletes with physical challenges.  He works hard to educate the community on disabilities while trying to break down barriers between able- and disabled bodies. Dr. Pierce firmly believes that no active individual should be restricted by any boundary:  NO LIMITS!

Dr. Pierce completed his Doctor of Osteopathy from the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine, Piscataway, New Jersey.  He subsequently completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He continued with sub-specialty training in Manual/Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine which includes training in E.M.G./Electromyography, Manual Medicine and Spinal Injections. He is also involved in inpatient and sub acute care rehabilitation.

Dr. Pierce has over 15 years of experience dealing with a large variety of situations including workman’s compensation cases, auto accidents, sports injuries and rehabilitation from various injuries.  He has spoken on many subjects related to PMR and sports injuries, both locally and nationally and is an Associate Professor at Michigan State University.   Michigan Sports and Spine conducts a quarterly continuing education lecture for case managers.  Dr. Pierce has treated everyone from professional athletes to elderly individuals.  His focus is one goal: to get his patients back into the game of life.
