When it comes to pain injections, we offer many options to best suit your needs.

We offer the following injections: epidural steroid injections, medial branch nerve blocks, radiofrequency neurotomy, and prolotherapy.

Each pain injection offers their own purpose and benefit, as well as their own side-effects. Knowing how each work will give you an advantage against your pain. To understand the different types of injections, please visit the View Medica Video for additional details.

  • Please inform us if you are using any blood thinners (COUMADIN, ASPIRIN, and PLAVIX).  If you are unsure, please call the office immediately.
  • Inform us of any ALLERGIES to dyes, iodine, lidocaine, latex, or steroids.
  • Inform us if you are diabetic and taking oral medications and/or insulin injections.
  • Inform us if you are or may be pregnant.
  • Discontinue use of any anti-inflammatory (CELEBREX, ARTHOROTEC, MOTRIN, NAPROSYN) medications 2 days prior to injection.
  • If you are extremely anxious, Ativan can be prescribed. Take 1 pill the night PRIOR to the procedure.  If too drowsy in the morning, wait to take the next pill until 1 hour prior to the injection.  If there was minimal effect, take 1 pill in the morning as well.
  • TAKE ALL OTHER MEDICATIONS AS PRESCRIBED.
  • YOU WILL NEED A DRIVER.  Have someone accompany you to your appointment.  You must have a ride or your appointment will be cancelled.
  • Please do not wear clothing that can be stained. For lumbar injections, we suggest that you wear pants with an elastic waistband.
  • YOU MUST ARRIVE at the facility at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time or your injection will be subject to cancellation.
  • Please check in at the reception desk Novi Surgery Center.
  • Expect to be at the Center for at least 1 hour.  YOUR RIDE MUST REMAIN AT THE FACILITY UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO LEAVE.
  • If in structured physical therapy, do not schedule an appointment for Thursday after injection or any time on Friday.  Your last therapy appointment before injection can be as late as Thursday morning (day of injection). Next appointment must be the following Monday.
  • Please plan to take the entire day off on the day of the procedure and also the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday after.  Sometimes just a half a day off on procedure day is adequate.
  • An I.V. will be established for the first injection as a precautionary measure.
  • The procedure will be performed under fluoroscopy (x-ray).
  • The physician will inject Lidocaine an anesthetic, a steroid and Depo-Medrol/celestone to decrease inflammation.
  • The procedure takes about 30 minutes.
  • You will be taken to the recovery area for monitoring until discharge.
  • You will need to remain inactive for the evening of the injection.
  • You should be off of work on the day of and the day after the injection.  Please consult the physician if this is a conflict.
  • The day after the injection, you should only be at about 25% of your normal activity level.
  • The second day after the injection, you should work up to approximately 50-75% of normal activity.
  • The third day after the injection, you should work up to approximately 75% of your normal activity.
  • The fourth day returns to normal activity with common sense restrictions.
  • Injections may be needed in sets of THREE SHOTS (sometimes four) 2 weeks apart.
